It is a feeling most of us face. In our work place we do our best, we work hard, we are sincere to our job, still we find that we do not get that promotion, we are not in the limelight, our work is not recognised. Why does this happen. Let us try to figure out why it happens and how we can improve our visibility at work

You can raise your visibility through positive ways. At your workplace if your job is of a repetitive kind it becomes a monotony. It is very difficult to do the same exact work all day long and every day. What you can do is ask for an assignment that will help you in developing your skills. This is one way in which you can make yourself stand out.

Take the initiative. Don’t wait for your manager to give you something new or exciting to do. Request work that will help you grow into your next assignment. In your office, you manager may be busy and he or she cannot read your mind. So make good use of the performance development and performance planning process that is in place. It will give a good opportunity to you to explain about yourself and highlight your performance. Don’t hesitate to ask and to care about your career and personal development.

Make effort to build a relationship with your boss. Check in with him or her periodically whether you need to or not. Be carefull not to make fake requests or pretend ignorance if you really have the answer. This will help you to tell your boss what is in your mind and make suggestions for improvement. You boss will welcome such interactions.

Look out for opportunities to apply what you have learnt. Seminars and workshops are places where you will come to know what is new in your area of work. Attending them will help you share your ideas and learn from the experiences of others. Ask your boss for attending such seminars and workshops. By applying new ideas in your workplace you get a chance to stand out and be recognised.

"High Performers" - what is it that they do which others don't do? The main difference between high performers and others is the kind of choices that they make. High performers make choices that others don't make. High performers bring in their best in everything that they do. They focus on what they are doing and work on the benefits that will accrue to the stake holders.

Mark Twain once said “I knew a man who picked a cat up by the tail. He learned 40 percent more about cats than the man who didn’t.” Sometimes we have to pick the cat up by the tail. You may get scratched up, but you’ll gain information that will set you on the right path to success.
